How to Choose a Blood Pressure Monitor

Omron HEM 466 150x150 How to Choose a Blood Pressure Monitor

When I first started checking my blood pressure, I bought a cheap Omron HEM-466 mechanical blood pressure monitor.  It comes with a rubber pump and frequently shows “EE” (reading error). I don’t’ recommend it at all.

After I was certain that I was suffering from high blood pressure conditions, I took monitoring seriously.  This is also because my doctor prescribed medicine and I started doing activities supposedly lowering my blood pressure.  Put it simply, I wanted to see the result, or the lack of it.

I listed all the factors that affect blood pressure and things that I would like to know

  • Recording time of the measurement.  It’s said that early morning hypertension is a sign of heart attack.  Monitoring blood pressure specifically in the morning help predicting the risk of the condition.
  • Accuracy:  I tried measuring my blood pressure more than once in sequence.  Those readings are rarely exactly the same. Firstly, you may not be exactly you in those readings. Secondly, you have to give the equipment a bit margin of error.   The best way to get an accurate reading is to have averaging 3 readings in sequence.
  • Show the progress of my medication and activity effort.  I want to have a graph showing the trend over a period of time.  This gives me encouragement and also provide indications whether things are working well.

Monitor Your Own Blood Pressure. Don’t be a Victim of the Presumption of “White Coat Hypertension”.

Being a Canadian, we have the benefit of free annual health check. My doctor had said my blook pressure being a little high.

“But this might be caused by you being a little nerveous.” She quickly followed.

So she did nothing for 4 years in a row.

The “White coat hypertension”, or “White coat syndrome”, is a common phenomenon in which patients exhibit high blood pressure in front a doctor, but not at home. I decided to check my own blood pressure at home.

Omron HEM 790IT Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor 150x150 Monitor Your Own Blood Pressure. Don’t be a Victim of the Presumption of “White Coat Hypertension”.I bought an Omron blood pressure monitor, on and off, checked my blood pressure when I’m relaxed. After a few month, surprise, surprise, I had high blood pressure, and have probably been suffering from it for quite some time. I had been a victim of the Presumption of “White coat syndrome”.

High blood pressure (HBP) should not be taken lightly and brushed aside.  HBP can damage the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of your body.  Heart attack is the No. 1 killer of both men and women in the United States. Each year, some 1.1 million people in the US have heart attacks, and almost half of them die.

Because of the “White coat hypertension”, you cannot blame your doctor for mis-diagnosing your blood pressure condition.  Blood pressure can only be accurately monitored in your home when you’re totally relax.  There are also time and conditions that you should and shouldn’t do the measurement.   I’ll talk about how I choose my blood pressure monitor in the next post.
